A Day In The Life: Vivid Festival 2013

Sydney has been transformed into a spectacular canvas of light, music and ideas! Vivid Sydney takes over the city after dark from 24 May – 10 June 2013.

Colouring the city with creativity and inspiration, Vivid Sydney highlights include the hugely popular immersive light installations and projections; performances from local and international musicians at Vivid LIVE at Sydney Opera House and the Vivid Ideas Exchange featuring public talks and debates from leading global creative thinkers.

The lights go on at exactly 6pm at night and its so popular that the crowds start from about 5pm! I went last night, I honestly think there was at least 2000 people! But that does not put a damper on there event. It was a lovely warm night, which is probably what attracted all the people, and city was so alive with activity night almost has a life of its own. The event has run for the last 3 years and this was my second year attending, and it was amazing! I personally think this year was better then last, I never think it can get better but every year it surprises me.

My personally favoriate piece was the opera house, which transitioned between at least 5 different themes, each of them more amazing then the last. it was everything from the iconic Luna Park face to a silhouette of a lady dancing to an almost space themes (which reminded me heavily of Black milk leggings!)

They have art installations all over the city, it is particular great for young children as many of them are interactive, but it is still lots of fun for the big kids like myself! The above photo is a light tunnel, which was fantastic and very popular and a great photo Opportunity!

The Museum of Contemporary Art was another popular feature, it has so many different themes from rainbows to rain, it had it all. It is hard not to be memorised by this attraction as it is one of the main focal points of the whole harbour!

Customs house never disappoints, every year it has been amazing. It is just off the water and if often missed, which is hard to believe considering how huge the crowd is! This installation is consistently a statement about society however this year it had many themes. Some were a social commentary and others were just darn pretty! One of my personal favourite themes was an Indian theme, although vivid is amazing, there is not a lot of cultural installations and it was refreshing to see something different.

I could not finish a blog post about Sydney without the famous Harbour Bridge! The bridge transitioned between cool hues to warm hues but was not overly exciting, just pretty. I don't know if they wanted to down play it because it gets all the attention on New Years Eve, but honestly, it could of have been more impressive. It is important to note that the light installation on the bridge is on the far side to everything else, so it is a bit of a walk. I am not too sure why they didn't do it facing the main attractions, seems a bit silly to me.

This post only shows some of my favourite installations, there are 60 in total, so it is definitely worth a trip in. My only advice is take comfortable walking shoes and a warm coat because it can get quite chilly standing by the water. It is a fantastic night out, i highly recommend you see it before it ends.
